Lesson 1

Discernment of Website Quality

Hello! My name is Jeremy, and I am the first Cyber Ninja. I will teach you about how to identify whether a website is safe or potentially harmful.
To determine the safety of a website, check the end of its URL. If the url ends in “.com”, it might have been made by just some random people wanting a good time. Of course, there are exceptions, such as dictionary.com and google.com, both very good websites.
However, if the website ends in “.gov”, the website can only be edited by the government, so it’s safe to trust (depending on your political stance).
The third ending is “.org”. It’s an indication that a site is run by a non-profit organization, such as the Red Cross or the Salvation Army. Another ending that could be either good or bad is “.net”. This is one of the newer endings of common URLs, so it hasn’t developed a stereotype yet.
Finally, we will speak of “.edu” endings. Normally given to universities and public schools, they can be usable. However, many universities give their students free space under this ending, so take your chances.
You are ready. Under the “Quiz” section, take the first quiz, named “Chapter 1 Quiz”. Good luck and stay safe. I believe in you.
